The pharmaceutical sector of Dubai is following a similar path witnessed at the regional level. It is rapidly expanding to meet primarily the evolving needs of its growing population, predicted to reach 3.5 million people by 2030.
In addition, the Dubai Industrial Strategy 2030 regards Dubai’s pharmaceutical industry as one of the main priority sub sectors to develop due to its future growth prospects, export potential and mid-term to long-term economic impact.
Some of the biggest Pharmaceutical companies in the world, including Pfizer, Novartis and AstraZeneca have set up regional offices in the emirate.
Telehealth
Dubai has pioneered the Middle East's first ever virtual hospital for providing remote care to patients across the city.
With a generally younger population where 85% of its residents are under the age of 45, coupled with high mobile penetration rates at over 90% has made it Telehealth implementation seamless.
The Telehealth industry has found its regional home within the borders in Dubai, with some hospitals already reporting over 75% consultations being carried out virtually.
Medical Tourism
Bolstered by its Medical Tourism Strategy, the Emirate is positioned as a global medical destination due to its introduction of a value-based, comprehensive, integrated and high-quality service delivery system, and to promote public and private collaboration in health care.
In 2016 alone, almost 330,000 health tourists visited the city, and that number is only projected to grow. Dubai is aiming for USD 708 Million in revenues stemming from its Medical Tourism industry by 2029, which will further expand its already highly diversified economy. As more Pharmaceutical factories being set up within the Emirate, the targets set do not seem out of range.
It has already put out ambitious projects, including the Human Genome project by the Dubai Health Authority, which seeks to upgrade skills among medical professionals and forecast the future of human health. It perfects gene scanning to detect changes in the genes, chromosomes, and proteins that can lead to genetic diseases.
